Can Performing In A Musical Improve Your Health?

Posted on: 19 April 2023

The performing arts have served as an important method of communication and expression for centuries. While many people enjoy watching a musical play being performed, few realize the many benefits they could reap by becoming a member of the cast.

Learn more about the potential health benefits that performing in a musical can help you harness for yourself in the future.

1. Strengthen Social Ties

Medical researchers have established that there is a connection between the strength of a person's social ties and the length of their life. Numerous studies suggest that strong social relationships can improve a person's ability to fight off germs, reduce stress levels, and avoid heart-related illnesses.

Musical theater provides the perfect opportunity for you to expand your social network. You will be able to strengthen your social ties with cast members as you engage in rehearsals and performances.

Performing in a musical will allow you to meet individuals that you might not come across in your normal day-to-day life, which can enrich your social interactions.

2. Get More Exercise

Finding time to exercise can be challenging for many people. If you don't like spending time in the gym working on your fitness, participating in musical theater productions could be a viable alternative.

Many of the scripts for musical productions require a significant amount of singing and dancing. You will be able to spend rehearsal and performance time being more physically active than normal as a result of this singing and dancing.

The best part about using musical theater as a form of exercise is that you will have fun while improving your physical condition.

3. Develop Motor Skills and Boost Brain Function

Motor skill development is often thought of as something that applies only to young children. The truth of the matter is that people of all ages can engage in the enhancement of their motor skills.

Musical theater features an element that has been linked with improved motor learning- dancing. The movements and steps that you will learn while rehearsing for a musical theater production can help you develop motor skills you wouldn't acquire through typical human movement.

Changes also occur within the brain when motor learning takes place. Dancing strengthens the connectivity between the two cerebral hemispheres in your brain. This means that performing in a musical theater production has the potential to help you maintain your neuroplasticity and improve your brain function in the future.

Choosing Different Art Mediums

When I began doing art more and more in my free time, I realized that most of the things I needed to make were with chalk pastels and pastel boards. I started thinking about what I liked to do and what I was good at, and a friend of mine suggested choosing different art mediums. I started focusing on trying different things, and before I knew it, I was creating collages, trying out oil painting, and even working with clay. Now I can honestly say that I have found several mediums that I like just as much as pastels, and it has been great to see my ability increase over time. Check out this blog for great tips on art.
